Indications Module™

Assessing the appropriateness of drug therapy for specific medical conditions.

The Indications Module is as a tool for assessing the appropriateness of drug therapy for a specific medical condition, based on current medical evidence. This module aims to help clinicians make informed decisions regarding medication therapy and may also be used to help identify potentially inappropriate drug treatment for a given disease. The module includes both FDA-approved and certain “off-label” indications substantiated by primary medical literature.

FDB Indications Module Advantages:

  • Generates a list of drugs—in a "look-up" mode—that may be used to treat a given disease state.
  • Generates a list of FDA-approved and off-label indications for a given drug.
  • Facilitates surveillance of drug utilization within an institution or practice setting by helping to identify cases of potentially inappropriate drug therapy for a given disease.
  • Facilitates the inference of a patient’s medical conditions from a patient’s medication list when actual patient diagnoses are unavailable. Facilitates drug-disease contraindication checking (see Drug-Disease Contraindications Module).
  • Used in conjunction with the First Databank Medical Lexicon (FML)—a controlled, concept-based medical vocabulary.
