FDB Launches New Cumulative Dose Check (CDC) Service
FDB (First Databank) today announced the launch of its new Cumulative Dose Check (CDC) service, part of FDB’s next generation of advanced dosing capabilities.
The CDC service provides actionable, patient-specific dose administration support and will reduce the risk of inadvertent medicines administration errors within inpatient settings. The launch follows recent analysis conducted by FDB on paracetamol administration data from two NHS Trusts that highlighted a significant issue: nearly one in three patients experienced cumulative dose errors during their hospital stay. The analysis - which spanned over 200,000 paracetamol administrations - demonstrates the need for enhanced safeguards at the point of dosing administration, an area often overlooked in current clinical support systems.
FDB has collaborated with customers and clinical teams within Acute and Mental Health Trusts in the UK throughout the development of this solution. The service has been rigorously tested using pseudonymised clinical data before its release, providing assurance to EPR and EPMA system providers on the solution’s capabilities and performance.
The CDC service has been built using the latest standardised FHIR services and is fully interoperable and compliant with national NHS England standards.
Darren Nichols, Managing Director at FDB, said: "CDC is our latest offering in the dosing decision support space, marking the culmination of years of dedicated work. FDB has long been recognised as a leader in clinical decision support, with our Multilex solution helping to reduce prescribing errors, including dosing errors, in secondary care for decades. However, our analysis revealed that a significant number of dosing errors occur at the point of administration, particularly when the timing of dosage is incorrect.
Our innovative CDC service addresses this gap in the market by offering real-time support to healthcare professionals at the point of administration. This helps to reduce the risk of overdosing for medications like paracetamol, especially in hospitals where such dose-checking mechanisms are currently lacking.”
CDC is a fully interoperable FHIR compliant solution. Due to the advances in interoperability in NHS healthcare systems, all Trusts, whether they are supported by Multilex CDS functionality or not, can take advantage of this new functionality from FDB as a standalone solution.
*For background, FDB Multilex is the UK's leading clinical decision support solution, deployed in over 10,000 sites. When integrated with an electronic prescribing solution, Multilex reduces prescribing errors through active clinical checking, including drug interaction checking, dosing guidance, allergy alerts, and duplicate therapy checks. Trusted by numerous NHS organisations, Multilex is renowned for its ability to significantly reduce medication errors and enhance patient safety.
